Dowlat Abad Windcatcher

Dowlat Abad Windcatcher, located in Yazd, Iran,  is a phenomenal example of vernacular architecture. In this model, there is a specific focus onto the qanat, which then looks closer into the culture of the Persian people in this area.

Concept and methodology

This model focuses on the massing of the overall building since this is very important to the function of the windcatcher itself.

To do this, we decided to make our model hinged.

In this project, we had to focus on vernacular architecture, and the massing and volume of the Dowlat Abad windcatcher which is very important to how this architecture is promoted. This building is carefully designed to support passive cooling.

The thick walls  are made to reduce heat gain during the day and release whatever is absorbed at night. This structure also has symbolic value in terms of traditional Persian architecture.

Traditional Persian architecture emphasizes in symmetry and balance, which is shown through the massing of the structure .

With the use of a hinge, we’re able to see the structure as well as the volume that is just as important. With this hinge, we’re also able to explore further functions, such as the qanat.
