Haven of Harlem

Haven of Harlem argues against the urban fabric and looks into feminism in architecture. Feminine architecture is not just curvature, but the idea of going against what is the norm. This highlights a type of desire that is derived from the nature of feminism and femininity.

Feminine Architecture

Through the curvature and angles, this fire station embraces the concept of femininity and feminine architecture.

Women firefighters are not as common in this field for multiple reasons, and through this project, we aim to attract them more. The roofing system is intentional and makes the experience through the building comforting by almost cradling those who walk through it. The fluidity of the roofs plays with the space in between, allowing natural light to seep through. By the changing atmosphere of the walls, the area becomes more attractive to others, inviting them to be curious and explore the space within.

With the overall experience and idea to make the fire station and the included community space balanced, we keep both areas close to one another while still having a safe distance between. This allows visitors to know that they are welcomed in this space, and provides all those who come here a “safe haven” to turn to.

An Outlier

In the sea of rectangles and harsh edges, this fire station pushes to fight against the urban fabric and create an inviting and unique experience in the midst of the hectic city.
